Educação em dois Tempos nas Terras do Bela Vista: Usina de Cana-de-Açúcar e Assentamento em Araraquara/SP

2011
This paper aims to present the teaching methods adopted by teachers in the settlement of Bela Vista do Chibarro in Araraquara/SP. We focus on the development of a pedagogical approach employed by the Escola do Campo "Prof. Herminio Pagotto" over two distinct time periods: the first period refers to the period when the sugarcane mill was the landowner of the farming lands and, the second period began with the establishment of the rural settlement. During the operational period of the mill, the school was designed to achieve the goals of the mill, such as the capital growth, and the major strategies used in teaching included moral values such as fidelity to duty and respect for authority. Whereas during the period of the settlement, the school provided new direction for education to the worker's child, enhancing education and contributing to the process of critical consciousness formation, encouraging students to become autonomous and reflective practitioners with respect to their experiences in their community and in the society. The methodology used in this study included literature reviews, bibliographic searches, and an exhaustive investigation of the historical documentation of that area as well as the examination of historical processes of transformation of a rural elementary school into a rural mainstream school, and direct observation of reality. Keywords: Rural Elementary School and Rural Mainstream School.
