Strength and deformation parameters from pressuremeter tests in clay

1990
Abstract Pressuremeter tests in clay have been simulated at laboratory scale by expanding hollow cylindrical specimens of clay using different expansion procedures. The results clearly demonstrate the influence of time dependent phenomena (consolidation and creep) on the pressuremeter expansion curves and the derived undrained strength and shear modulus values. The findings of the laboratory scale study have been confirmed by results obtained using a Cambridge Self-Boring Pressuremeter in a clay calibration chamber. Recommendations are made for test procedures which minimize the time dependent effects.
