Waste Treatment and Disposal

Abstract This chapter presents options for the treatment and disposal of wastewater and solids, both of which impact biosecurity, sustainability, and profitability. Treatment depends on location (inland vs. coastal), discharge regulations, and cost. Water use in limited-exchange indoor biofloc systems is highly efficient: one kg of shrimp can be produced with as little as 98–169 L of water, compared with 20,000–64,000 L in traditional aquaculture.
