RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN URBAN STRUCTURE AND TRANSPORT STRUCTURE FROM A SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY STANDPOINT

1996
Urban structure and transport structure, and transport and building development, are very broad concepts. The report deals only with intraurban phenomena and only with personal transport. It concentrates on the city from a local rather than regional perspective. The emphasis is on the postwar period. An examination is made of general urban and transport development, location of activities and movement patterns in the city with respect to accessibility, the interaction between urban and transport structure from the standpoints of both theory and specific examples, and possible future forms of transport and building development are discussed with reference to the previous sections. The review is confined to social and economic geography aspects. Changes in the transport system may result in reorganisation of urban space. A new transport technology may have both a centralising and decentralising effect. Nodes, their positions and significance, have great importance for transport structure in a city since they generate movement activities. In the traditional city the transport system is radial. If congestion occurs, activities disperse; if this is unstructured, conditions for public transport deteriorate; if structured resulting in formation of subcentra, public transport is rerouted. Integration of activities creates better conditions for pedestrians and cyclists. Density of a city has great influence on structure of transport system.
