Factors influencing the complications of the secondary cytoreductive surgery in recurrent ovarian carcinoma.

2009
Objective To analyze the risk factors influencing the complications of the secondary cytoreductive surgery in recurrent ovarian carcinoma. Methods The surgical and clinical data were retrospectively reviewed in 111 cases of recurrent ovarian carcinoma with secondary cytoreductive surgery.Chi-square test was used for statistic analysis. Results Postoperative complications occurred in 25.2% of the operated patients, much more than that(7.2%) in the initial surgery. The main complications are the abdominal wound infection, the intestinal obstruction, the intestinal fistula and the rectum injury, etc.By providing supportive treatments to the patients, the infection rate dropped from 19.1% to 4.7%.Conclusions Complications had some relationships with patient's age, postoperative nutritional status, the way of operation, surgery experience and skill, and hospital equipment and conditions,etc.Well-done preparations before the operation and supportive treatments around the operation can reduce the complication rate.
