Interest in pediatrics remains strong, Match Day data shows

Interest in primary care specialties continues to be strong among U.S. medical school seniors. For the third straight year, more than half of graduating U.S. medical school seniors will pursue training in one of the generalist specialties, according to 1997 Match Day data released by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The NRMP reports that 56 percent, or 7,583 graduating U.S. medical school seniors, matched to a first-year residency position in pediatrics, internal medicine, or family practice.
