PROPOSALS TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY IN DAVEYTON: A CASE STUDY

1982
Daveyton is a township 36km east of central Johannesburg housing more than 110,000 people. It has a high pedestrian accident rate which prompted detailed study of the whole accident situation in the township. The study revealed an average accident rate of 0.035 accidents/dwelling/year, with a high percentage of injury (45.7%), pedestrian (35.0%), and nighttime (51.8%) accidents. In order to improve pedestrian safety it is proposed to create a road heirarchy by closing many east-west routes to concentrate traffic along the spine road. Fifteen synchronised signals will be installed to keep vehicle speeds below 50km/h. (TRRL)
