CONSTRUCTION DEWATERING NEAR ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE LOCATIONS

2014
Construction dewatering near environmentally sensitive locations require plans and techniques to ensure that no harm is done to the environment. Although construction dewatering is a component of the project that is typically considered a contractor’s means and methods that the engineer and owner prefer not to control, the Owner could have responsibility for damages if the effort is mishandled. Construction dewatering plans may be needed if a project is in proximity to a salt water body, a site with contamination, or a wetland. Further, downstream waters should be protected from turbidity and erosion that can result from construction activities, including construction dewatering. When these situations are encountered, the design engineer can employ various techniques to reduce those impacts in the construction documents including the following: • Hydraulic barriers • Reduced quantity and duration of dewatering • Environmental cleanup measures • Onsite disposal areas • Monitoring
