Performance comparison of Si and SiC MOSFETs in a bidirectional dual half-bridge series resonant converter

2018
Bidirectional converters form an integral part of alternate energy systems and electric vehicles. High-frequency transformer isolated dual full-bridge series resonant converter (SRC) has electrical isolation with high efficiency due to soft switching and operates with a small variation in phase-shift angle. In this paper, a high-frequency transformer isolated bidirectional dual half-bridge SRC is designed and first simulated to verify its operation with variations in input/output voltages and load. Then a 100 W prototype experimental converter is built based on the design. This converter is used to test the performance of Si and SiC MOSFETs. It is shown that SiC MOSFETs operate with higher efficiency compared to Si MOSFETs especially at light load conditions.
