Spectroscopy and Dynamics of the S1 State of Jet-Cooled 1-Naphthol.

The spectroscopy of the S 0 →S 1 transition of 1-naphthol is investigated with fluorescence excitation and dispersed fluorescence techniques. Vibronic structure in both states is analyzed and correlated to previous IR assignments as well as to naphthalene spectroscopy. Two distinct conformers with respect to rotation about the C-OH bond are identified, and evidence for their absolute conformation is presented. Vibrational dynamics in S 1 are probed by picosecond time-resolved fluorescence. Vibrational energy redistribution is identified by quantum beats in the energy and time-resolved emission
