Summary Oxygen is essential for many organisms who have therefore evolved mechanisms to enable survival during hypoxia. A new study describes how a well-known bacterial surfactant, called surfactin, facilitates bacterial viability when oxygen becomes limiting by reducing oxygen consumption.
