Gestão integrada de resíduos sólidos: o lixo de aracaju analisado sob a ótica da gestão de meio ambiente

The Solid Waste Management System of the city of Aracaju SE as it was operated through the end of 2000 is diagnosed and analyzed in order to identify social, technical and legal difficulties and to propose alternative solutions. With an informal, descriptive and conclusive focus nevertheless directed toward improvement, this study was based upon a survey of pertinent literature, case studies from various regions of Brazil, data obtained from the public company in charge of the administration of solid residues in the city (EMSURB) as well on direct interviews with the community. The purpose was to identify interest in a selective waste collection program. Until then, initiatives for the solution of the garbage problem were not considered a priority in the agenda of the public company, despite community interest in collaborating with such a program of selective waste selection.
