ODONTOLOGICAL SURGICAL APPROACH IN A PATIENT WITH MYELODYSPLASIA SYNDROME

2020
Myelodysplastic syndrome is characterized as a hematologic disorder in which hematopoietic progenitor cells present a clonal anomaly, resulting in cytopenia of 1 or more lineages of these cells. Patients with this syndrome may present hemostatic problems after being submitted to invasive dental procedures. A 59-year-old woman attended the hematology service with diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome in programming of bone marrow transplant. The dental team was contacted for evaluation of oral health. In the clinical and radiographic examination the presence of potential foci of infection with the need of adaptation of the buccal environment, involving multiple dental surgery, was detected. After evaluation of the hematologic examinations, dental extractions were performed. The medical team performed transfusion of platelets before the procedure, provided antibiotic coverage, and used effective local hemostatic measures that favored a postoperative outcome without intercurrences.
