New Aspects in Optimal Design of Asynchronous Motors used in Light Railway Traction

The motors driving light railway traction vehicles need a lot active and reactive electrical energy, consequently the exploitation costs are high. That is why by the research we carried out and the results presented here we aim at emphasizing that these costs can be minimized by an optimal design. It must be said that the problem is very difficult, even if performant numerical computers are used. That is why, it is necessary to know the operation conditions (load shocks, vibrations, mechanical shocks, high operation temperatures), the restrictive requirements imposed (gauge conditions imposed by the available space on the rolling material, high maximum torque etc.). On the base on this information, the cross-section of the motor is optimized. The simulations we presented justify the decrease of the total cost 19200 Euro for a motor, as against the existing variant.
