Liposomes and Other Drug Delivery Systems in the Treatment of Leishmaniasis

1989
The identification of a compound showing selective toxicity for a parasite, as determined by biochemical or in vitro screening techniques is the first important stage in the development of a new drug. However, the compound must still show that selective anti-parasite activity in vivo at a specific site(s) of infection whilst contending with a range of pharmacological factors (e.g. absorption, metabolism, distribution).
