In their article discussing implications of the declining birth rate on the future need for pediatricians in the United States, Gorwitz and Smith (56:592, October 1975) conclude that three basic choices need to be considered in planning for the training of pediatricians: 1. Leave the number and content of pediatric residencies as previously constituted even though this has the potential of producing a surplus of physicians whose training bears an increasingly limited relationship to their practice.
