Dynamic compressive strength of Zn–22Al foams

2009
Abstract The compressive property of Zn–22Al alloy (ZA22) foams was investigated for the strain rates ranging from 2.2 × 10 −3 to 1.8 × 10 3  s −1 . The dynamic compressive behaviors of the foams were studied utilizing Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system. The experimental results indicate that the compressive strength and energy absorption capacity of the foams under dynamic loading condition are much greater than that under quasi-static loading condition for certain relative density, which demonstrates the remarkable strain rate sensitivity. The correlative factors of the strain rate sensitivity, the cell wall material and the gas pressure in close cell, were discussed.
