Jet vapour deposition (JVD) : extensive product study and first evaluation of coupling with a processing line

2005
At the beginning of this project, CRM had developed and tested the JVD concept to evaporate Zn, Mg and Al with a small laboratory evaporator. The coating width was 110 mm and evaporation rate could reach 25 g/m 2 for a line speed of 60 m/min (e.g. for Zn). The objectives of this research program were: - to give possibilities for new alloys by mixing vapours - to widen the range of possible coating elements to other candidates like Mn, Cr and Fe (with higher melting temperature and lower vapour pressure) - to extend the width of the JVD evaporator (circular to wide linear design) - to study the compatibility of the JVD with existing annealing and galvanising lines (productivity, steel cleanliness, mechanical properties...) - to get sufficient experience and data to draw a first economic evaluation of JVD.
