Radical copolymerization of methyl 2-chloroacrylate with carbonyl-containing phenyl methacrylates

2008
New chlorinated and carbonyl-containing polymethacrylates were prepared via the radical copolymerization of methyl 2-chloroacrylate with ortho- and para-acetylphenyl methacrylates or ortho- and para-formylphenyl methacrylates. It was shown that the reactivity ratios and the yields of copolymers of the ortho phenyl methacrylate isomers are lower than those for the corresponding para isomers because to the steric hindrance created by the substituents on the phenyl ring. Some mechanical parameters (ultimate tensile strength, compressive strength, flexural strength, and the Vicat softening point) of the copolymers are better than those of poly(methyl methacrylate).
