P002 : Association between allergic diseases and number of person in the household using the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
2020
Background: Atopic dermatitis and asthma are chronic allergic disease that puts burdens to the patient's life and can be affected by the lifestyle.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the association between allergic diseases and number of household member.
Methods: A total of 14,206 participants aged more than 19 years who underwent the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were enrolled for analysis. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the odds ratios for the presence of atopic dermatitis or asthma according to the number of household member.
Results: One-person households were significantly associated with atopic dermatitis (HR=2.197, 95% CI, 1.355-3.562) compared to the more than four-person households after adjustment for age, sex, smoking status, drinking status, physical activity, education level, income status and stress. However, asthma was not related with the number of household member after adjustment.
Conclusion: This study used a nationwide population-based survey conducted by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to reveal that the number of household member was significantly associated with atopic dermatitis, but, not associated with asthma. The fact that the frequency of atopic dermatitis is higher in the smaller number of household members, supports a hygiene hypothesis.
