Studies in antifertility agents: part XIV--SECO-Steroids VII: Synthesis of 2 alpha- & 2 beta, 6 beta-dimethyl-3 beta-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-trans-bicyclo-(4.3.0)nonan-7-ones & some related compounds.

The synthesis of 2alpha- and 2beta 6beta-dimethyl-3 beta-(p-hydroxy phenyl)-trans-bicyclo-(4.3.0)nonan-7-ones and some related compounds is presented. 2beta 6beta-dimethyl-3beta-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-trans-bicyclo-(4.3.0) and 2.6 beta-dimethyl-3(p-methoxyphenyl) bicyclo-(4.3.0)non-1-en-7-one were prepared by the catalytic reduction followed by oxidation of 26beta-dimethyl-3-(p-methoxyphenyl)bicyclo-(4.3.0)nona-2 9-diene-7beta-ol. The latter was prepared by the condensation of p-methoxyphenyl-lithium and 26beta-dimethyl-7beta-hydroxybicyclo(4.3.0 )non-1-en-3-one.
