Incidence of Scabies in Dogs at Some Veterinary Hospital and Animal Clinics in Surabaya from January-December 2012

This study of incidence of scabies was conducted in some animal clinics in Surabaya. Scabies is a contagious skin disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei affecting a wide range of host species including dogs and humans. This mite infect in the skin and form tunnels under the skin layer caused by ithcing, alopecia and skin damage. Diagnostic of the disease is carried out by observing clinical symptoms and scraping the infected skin to find the parasite. Data were collected from medical record of some veterinary hospital and animal clinics in Surabaya from January-December 2012. The data observed show that cases of scabies in Surabaya founded 41 cases, the highest of cases in January and April 19.5%; based the dogs breed of 85.4% purebreed and 14.6% of local dogs; based on the age of 58.5% at age more than one year, 31.7% five months up to one year, and 9.8% under five months; based on the sex 61% male dog and 39% female dog.
