The streaming media on-demand system comprises a central server arranged in a computer network, at least a router connected with the central server, an exchanger connected with the router, and at least two set-top boxes connected on the exchanger; the central server comprises a set-top box information module for storing files of set-top box address, set-top box resource state, set-top box storage space, set-top box CPU computing power and utilization factor, set-top box uplink bandwidth and utilization factor, set-top box broadcast list names and program downloading percentage; the set-top box with an IP address comprises an embedded real-time operating system and a storage medium, and various information corresponds to the information on the set-top box information module. The invention is the most economical and effective method for realizing the streaming media on-demand system based on the set-top box at present, and has the advantages that the program sources are rich, and the expandability is good.
