Immunological and digestive mechanisms are alike in that they break down protein and saccharide macromolecules into smaller units, which are thereby rendered both harmless and usable. Metchnikoff considered immunity to be one aspect of digestion and indeed in primitive animals both functions are served by one mechanism — phagocytosis.
