Designing a transcranial magnetic stimulator coil for Deep Brain Stimulation

2016
Human brain is a very complex organ and may suffer from various diseases and disorders. Therefore, techniques are required to diagnose the disorders and provide necessary treatment. Electrical or magnetic deep brain stimulation has been successfully used for both these purposes. This research develops a type of therapy that uses stimulation to treat neurological disorders, diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system which comprises of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, neuromuscular junction and muscles. When medications have become less effective and/or when side effects of the medications interfere with daily activities, doctors may prescribe Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a recent non-invasive clinical treatment usually reserved for those suffering from severe treatment-resistant depression. Deep TMS can be effective in common diseases associated with neurological disorder: Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer and other traumatic disorders of the nervous system. This paper focuses on designing a suitable transcranial magnetic coil for DBS. Deep TMS, in the field of diagnosis and therapy, is a new line of research in Bangladesh as well as a recent one in the world perspective.
