The refining process of blister copper with ammonia has been practiced at Kosaka Smelter since 1967. However, in order to lower costs and simplify operation, a technique of deoxidation of copper in the anode furnace using bunker fuel oil was developed as an ammonia substitution. This paper describes the process development of bunker fuel oil poling, its recent performance and cost comparison with ammonia poling.
