Bronze Sagaris of the Scythian Time Warriors – a Random Find from the Ust-Koksinsky District, Altai Republic

2019
The article analyzes the bronze sagaris discovered in 2016 on the left bank of the Katun river, near the Katanda village. The sagaris refers to the so-called full-size military weapons of the Scythian time. This item is a rare find in the territory of the Altai Mountains. This massive item, 20 cm long, has an oval, slightly flattened sleeve. A long straight hammer head is oval in cross section; a short massive butt is of a hexagonal shape. Analogies with the object can be found in the materials of the Pazyrykskaya culture. The object should be attributed to the 5th – 3rd centuries. BC. The Sagaris was found outside the archaeological context. However, it should be noted that near the finding location there are several burial grounds and settlement complexes known since the 2nd half of the 20th century. V.V. Radlov unearthed a part of one of the barrow complexes in 1865. Later it was assigned to the Pazyrykskaya archaeological culture. It is not excluded that it is possible to correlate the bronze sagaris with the Pazyrykskaya cultural stratum.
