the tumors of the parotid and their care: 5 years experience at the university hos pitaL gabrieL t oure in bamako Objective: The objective of this study was to report the experience of the service, describing the profile of patients, the type of intervention, thehistological type, andthe surgical results. Patients and methods: It is a longitudinal retrospective study over a period of 5 years and for records of patients who underwent surgery for tumors of the parotid gland. Results: Thirty-six patients met our inclusion criteria. The median age was 49.5 years; female represented 62%. Unilateral parotid swelling was right in 55% and 45% left. The systematic cervical ultrasound showed signs of malignancy presumption in 3 cases. Superficial parotidectomy was performed in 28 patients (77%)against total parotidectomy in 8 patients (23%). The pleomorphic adenoma was the most common histologic type (79%), malignant tumors accounted for 5%. The postoperative complications were surgical site infection (2 cases), facial nerve’s paresis and facial nerve’s paralysis (respectively 6 and 5 cases) and Frey syndrome(2 cases). All the cases of paresis of the facial nerve recovered completely after surgery. Three of the 5 cases of facial nerve paralysis recovered completely. There has been no recurrence. Conclusion: In our experience at the CHU Gabriel Toure, Bamako, parotid tumours occurred in young adult women. Histological polymorphism of tumours of the parotid with the usual predominance of the pleomorphic adenoma has been confirmed. The results of parotidectomies mainly partial were satisfactory in 89% of cases.
