Challenges Faced by OFDM Technique for Broadband Wireless Mobile Communication

2012
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM ) has been adopted as a predominant access technique to meet the challenges offered by next generation broadband wireless mobile systems. OFDM has gained a lot of interest in recent years because of its superior performance and benefits over older, more traditional single-carrier modulation methods. OFDM has the ability to cope with severe channel conditions without complex equalization filters and simultaneously provides high spectral efficiency due to orthogonal multiplexing of sub-carriers. The implementation of OFDM system is simplified through use of efficient signal processing techniques like FFT/IFFT. Despite many potential advantages offered by OFDM system, it also suffers from major drawbacks like Inter/Intra Symbol Interference, Inter-carrier Interference, PAPR, etc. This paper provides extensive coverage to the major challenges faced by OFDM systems for broadband wireless applications. Further, it is aimed to cover in detail different type of OFDM systems, which are under consideration for current research in the field of broadband wireless communication.
