Hydrogen assisted cracking and CO 2 corrosion behaviors of low-alloy steel with high strength used for armor layer of flexible pipe

2018
Abstract In this study, hydrogen induced cracking (HIC), sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC) and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) were carried out to study hydrogen assisted cracking behavior (HIC, SSCC and HE) of high strength pipeline steel used for armor layer of flexible pipe in ocean. The CO 2 corrosion behavior of designed steel with high strength was studied by using immersion experiment. The experimental results demonstrate that the corrosion resistance of designed steel with tempered martensite to HIC, SSCC and HE is excellent according to specific standards, which contributes to the low concentration of dislocation and vacancies previously formed in cold rolling process. The corrosion mechanism of hydrogen induced cracking of designed steel, which involves in producing process, microstructure and cracking behavior, is proposed. The designed steel with tempered martensite shows excellent corrosion resistance to CO 2 corrosion. Cr-rich compound was first formed on the coupon surface exposed to CO 2 -saturated brine condition and chlorine, one of the corrosion ions in solution, was rich in the inner layer of corrosion products.
