Provided is an illumination device (20) formed by a plurality of planar light sources (21) arranged in the planar direction and having a biased luminance distribution on a light emission plane (43). The planar light sources (21) have an identical bias direction in the luminance distribution. The planar light sources (21) are arranged so that some of the planar light sources(21) have the bias direction different from that of the other planar light sources (21) and a high-luminance portion and a low-luminance portion of the light emission plane (43) are arranged in the straight line. With this configuration, the high-luminance portions are not arranged in a single string to cause a bright band and accordingly, the display quality can be improved.
