Demonstration of glutamate decarboxylase-immunoreactive neurones in cultures of rat substantia nigra

1981
Abstract Glutamate decarboxylase was immunohistochemically localized in primary cultures of newborn rat substantia nigra. The reactivity was restricted to the cytoplasm of a few neurones. The findings suggest that γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-synthesizing cells are present in substantia nigra and suggest that some nigral neurones may use GABA as a transmitter.
