Neuropathologically confirmed case of early onset alzheimer's disease with atypical clinical manifestation

Case Report At Psychiatric Department of UH "Alexandrovska" died a 56 year old man with clinical diagnosis: not specified psychosis. The debut of symptoms was at the age of 53 with progressive memory decline and behavior disturbances. At the time of hospitalization, clinical picture was dominated by emotional and behavior changes, sleep disturbances, and loss of appetite. Computer tomography of brain revealed cortical atrophy. Frontal and hippocampal atrophy was confirmed by macroscopic examination of the brain. Histopathologically were found moderate neuritic plaques fulfilling CERAD criteria for definite Alzheimer's disease; neurofibrillary tangles and neuropil threads according to Braak and Braak pathological stage IV. Multidisciplinary approach including clinical, neuropsychological, neuroimaging and eventually neuropathological methods is necessary for differential diagnosis of early onset alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders with dementia. from International Society on Brain and Behaviour: 2nd International Congress on Brain and Behaviour Thessaloniki, Greece. 17–20 November 2005
