Design of a Waveguide-fed Dynamic Reconfigurable Metasurface Element

2020
A dynamically tunable metasurface element in the K-band is proposed. The element consists of a circular complementary resonator patterned into the upper microstrip line and excited through by guided waves. Different from the rectangular resonator, the introduction of the circular structure increases the current distribution area on the resonator, which can reduce the ohmic loss on the element, therefore improves the radiation efficiency. By loading PIN diodes on the element, the dynamic reconfigurability of the element and the combination of abilities of radiation and adjustment are achieved. No external excitation antenna is required, which facilitates low-profile design. This element can be used to design RF devices such as reconfigurable metasurface antennas, and has potential application prospects in dynamic beam-forming, microwave imaging, and security screening.
