Real Time PMD Compensation for RZ Transmission Systems

In conclusion we have demonstrated that PMD compensation is achievable with a simple technique that exploits the property of the dispersive propagation of a phase-modulated signal. The amount of PMD that can be compensated for is expressed in terms of maximum instantaneous DGD=50 ps that we achieved from our lab trials. Present scheme of PMDC is synchronous with the modulation frequency and its restoring performance is limited to half time slot. The maximum compensation range of DGD is sufficient for most of the applications in terrestrial transmission systems.
