Surveillance of muscle and organ samples of ovine and caprine for the presence of residues of gentamicin sulfate by HPLC.

2006
Muscle/organ samples of sheep and goat were subjected to solid phase extraction, clean-up procedure and derivatization prior to chromatographic analysis. High performance liquid chromatographic technique employing acetonitrile:water as mobile phase, C18 column and fluorescence detector was standardised for detection and quantitation of gentamicin residues. Gentamicin was eluted in 4 components viz. C1, C1a C2a and C2 within 15 minutes with lowest level of detection 50 ng/gm. Recoveries ranged between 41.89 – 48.65% for muscle, 45.23 – 61.23% for liver and 39.82 – 44.61% for kidney. 5.56% samples showed violative amounts of gentamicin residues in muscle and organ samples of sheep and goat.
