Use of a fast ion beam to measure the turbulence level in a shock wave

1979
The turbulence level behind the front of an electrostatic shock wave has been determined experimentally from the broadening of a probing beam of cesium ions. The experimental apparatus is described, and the results are reported. A thermionic ion source is used, and the beam is detected with a microchannel plate. As a result, the method is highly sensitive.
