Experimental study on establishment canine model of septostomy using three different methods

2011
Objective To evaluate the advantage and disadvantage of three methods for septostomy in canine. Methods Total 8 dogs were attempted septostomy procedure with three different methods. Two dogs were performed septostomy by transvenous approach using the brockenbrough needdle(Group A:interventional method); Two dogs were performed septostomy by surgical procedure without extracorporeal circuIation and with temporarily cava venous blocking(Group B:surgical method under direct vision);Four dogs were performed septostomy by surgical procedure with trans-right atrium approach and the guidance of transoesophageal echocardiograph(TEE) without extracorporeal circuIation and cava venous blocking(Group C:surgical method under TEE guidance without blocking). The rate of technical success, the rate of procedure-related death, and the repeatability of different methods were compared in study. Results In group A,interventional procedure was failure in one dog,and displace of septostomy was found in the other dog;In group B,one dog died during the procedure because of arrhythmia, the other dog died 12 hours after procedure because of heart failure; In group C,septostomy procedure were successful in all dogs,no procedure-related death occurred. Conclusion In three methods of septostomy,we thought that the surgical method under TEE guidance without blocking was the optimal procedure for sepostomy of canine model due to the better repeatability and lower rate of procedure-related death.
