Risk assessment data needs for D D of the Fernald production area

1993
The production area at the Fernald Environmental Management Project (FEMP), located [approximately]18 miles northwest of Cincinnati, Ohio, was used to process uranium ore and ore concentrates to produce high-purity uranium metal for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessor agencies from 1952 until 1989. Thorium was also produced on a smaller scale. The site was placed on the National Priorities List in 1989 and is currently undergoing remediation in accordance with the requirements of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) of 1980, as amended. This paper discusses the data needed to carry out the risk assessment required to support the decontamination and decommissioning of the former production area. An overview of the risk assessment methodology is also included.
