Design and Research of New-Type Clamping Fixture Based on Tensile Test of Wire and Cable Materials

2020
When conducting the tensile test for insulating materials of wire and cable with the wedge grips or screw grips, it frequently occurs the problems on specimen that “slipping” and “breaking” in grips. Aiming at the problems, we researched a new type of clamping fixtures. The upper part of one fixture is consisted by a screw-able support rod with a location hole, for the specimen to wound around it. And the lower part consists of a spring-guided clamping mechanism for pretightening and positioning it. The specimen is clamped by means of winding it around the rod and kept vertically symmetric through the location hole between two fixtures. We have established the 3D model of the fixtures by using the SOLIDWORKS and verified the feasibility of winding clamping method by using the finite element simulation. Finally, the physical prototype is made for further proof that the design can successfully solve the above problems, and make the test results accurate and reliable, reaching the results required by the standards, improved the success ratio and efficiency of the tests. It provides a method and reference for selecting the mechanical test fixture to conduct the tensile test of materials.
