Urgencias: una especialidad para el mundo moderno

Both in medical education and in medical practice emergencies have always been included within the framework of other specialties. Increasing volumes of information and its higher complexity have demonstrated that this is no longer a valid approach. The University of Antioquia, in Medellin, Colombia, is in the process of implementing reforms leading to undergraduate and postgraduate training in emergency medicine. In this article the worldwide evolution of emergency medicine is discussed and the programs of this University are described in the context of the Colombian health situation.
