INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE STOPPING PERFORMANCE OF SHIPS, FINAL REPORT

1984
Stopping tests were performed with the model of a freighter that was forced by lateral constraints to move on a straight course. The propeller rate of revolution was changed according to an idealized program linearly with time, starting from steady state ahead to a constant rate of revolution. Model speed, propeller rate of revolution, thrust and torque were measured during the tests with different approach speeds, reversed propeller rates of revolution and reversing durations. These runs were supplemented by steady state propulsion and towing tests. In the report, the influences of the different parameters on stopping distance and stopping time are shown.
