Environment in the Community, Community in the Environment

1999
AbstractThe project of community sustainability unites concerns for the environment, the economy and social justice. Public administration scholars and practitioners are in privileged positions from which to contribute to this project. Public administration theory and practice need an alternative orientation in order to sustain our communities and the local and regional environmental qualities upon which they depend. This anicle discusses the place of the environment in our communities’ agendas, and the place of communities in the environmental agenda. Sustaining communities requires attention to the ongoing rediscovery and perpetuation of public service, the public trust, and environmental and community stewardship in a democracy.
