Study of EEG in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy

2005
Aim To observe the clinical value of EEG monitoring in neonates with hypoxicischemic encephalopathy (HIE).Methods Thirty three neonates with HIE were monitored by EEG.Results The total abnormality rate of EEG was 75.8%(25/33).The mild, moderate and severe abnormality rate ofEEG were 24%,64% and 12% respectively. The abnormality rate of EEG in neonates with mild HIE was 37.5%.In moderate and severe HIE,the abnormality rate of EEG was 83.3% and 100% respectively. The incidence rate of clinical sequelae was 0% in patients with mild abnormal EEG and 52% in patients with moderate andsevere abnormal EEG.Conclusions EEG abnormality degree might have a positive correlation with the severe degree of clinical HIE.EEG might be a sensitive index to observe the brain functions in the acute stage of neonate HIE.EEG monitoring might be helpful in early diagnosis and therapy and judgement of prognosis.
