PPPS-2013: Accurate modal decomposition of the multimode high power microwave output using blind optimization

A new approach for the complete modal decomposition of the electric fields emerging from the over-mode high power microwave devices, such as the devices with coaxial waveguide and over-mode Cerenkov generators, is presented in this paper. Based on the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) algorithm, mode coefficients of the multimode high power microwave output can be exactly calculated utilizing the far-field intensity distribution of the electric field. Numerical simulation validates the feasibility and the average reconstruction error is around 1%. With this method, mode controlling becomes fast and effective, which is very significant in the development of over-mode high power microwave devices for high frequency radiation.
