IoT Gateways for Industrial and Medical Applications: Architecture and Performance Assessment
2020
The goal of the Internet of Things is to enable the connection of objects to the Internet, making it possible new paradigms and applications for humans and machines. Typical architecture of IoT systems relies on cloud services: simple sensors and actuators entrust to cloud intelligence for data analysis and action planning. The significant number of devices, the throughput requirements of data flows and latency-demanding applications impose today new paradigms as decentralized computing based on gateways. In this paper, we present a general gateway architecture and evaluate its performance in managing routine tasks of IoT applications. The architecture enables decentralized intelligence and distributed computing, and it introduces a low computational burden. These aspects, with the flexibility of the proposed architecture, make it a promising solution in typical IoT applications.
