Industrial emulsion polymerization - safety and scale up aspects

In the industrial emulsion polymerization safety and scale up aspects are often examined separately. In scale up it is usually intended to produce the same product properties in large scale plants as in laboratory development. Unfortunately not all characteristic numbers can be kept constant while going to a larger scale. Therefore the significant numbers must be identified in lab scale experiments. The plant safety can be controlled by online-methods. With adiabatic and isothermal calorimeters important thermodynamic and kinetic data can be measured, that allows the simulation of critical situations. Combining kinetic and thermodynamic models in a complex plant simulation creates the possibility to look at safety and scale up aspects simultaneously.
