A Tightly-Coupled, Semi-Implicit CFD Approach for All-Mach Number Flows

2011
In this work, we investigate A simplified implicit marching procedures within a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code with an overall goal of developing simpler, semi-implicit marching procedures relevant to complex CFD analyses. A segregated finite-volume formulation for compressible fluids is implemented within the OpenFOAM 1 framework. A preconditioned, segregated-implicit solution procedure is used to march in a dualtime, providing an apparently stable, time-accurate solution procedure. The method relies on the AUSM + -up scheme for all-Mach numbers 2 to provide accurate discretization for low- and high-Mach numbers. Numerical results for single-phase flows indicate that the method significantly out performs explicit methods, while retaining their simplicity. Thus, the proposed method can potentially provide a more efficient solution method for certain classes of CFD problems.
