Introduction to Noise pollution control

1998
This special issue was commissioned by the National Committee on Applied Mechanics of the Institution of Engineers, Australia with the aim to provide an introductory course on noise pollution control. The contents of the course, based on the author's lecture notes for degree students, have been modified to assist the engineering practitioner on solving noise pollution and control problems in industry. The course also serves as a prequisite for: (i) in-depth studies on acoustics given in the literature, (ii) gaining skills in acoustic design of equipment, and (iii) the application of laboratory and computer model simulation techniques in noise pollution control problems. The author wishes to acknowledge the contributions of selected references used in compiling this course, including the Australian Standards on Noise Control. Some practical problems and solutions have been presented in Appendix C to demonstrate the role of acoustic theory in noise pollution control.
