Broken intraocular lens haptic entrapped in visually significant posterior capsule opacification

2017
We report the case of a 56-year-old woman who had cataract surgery in both eyes 5 years ago and presented at our clinic with blurry vision in the left eye. Clinical examination showed an entrapped segment of a single-piece foldable intraocular lens (IOL) haptic on the posterior capsule in the left eye. After discussion with the patient, a neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) posterior capsulotomy was performed. On follow-up examinations over 6 months after the Nd:YAG capsulotomy, there were no signs of inflammation, the IOL was well centered, and the corrected distance visual acuity was 6/9 in the left eye. This case report highlights a rare complication of a broken IOL entrapped in visually significant posterior capsule opacification and its safe, noninvasive management using Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy.
